Review of Siew Lup (2016 Film):

Enlivened by Korean chief Park Chan Wook’s Retribution Set of three, Singaporean chief Sam Loh makes Holy messengers of Retaliation Set of three, which consolidates food with mishandled female casualty turned femme fatale. Siew Lup (Broil Meat in Cantonese) is the second part of Holy messenger of Retribution Set of three, going before the 2015’s most memorable section, Lang Tong (Bubbled Soup in Cantonese). Highlighting new and youthful entertainers, the set of three pushes the limits of sex, viciousness and savagery in Singapore film history.

Overall, the movie is about the numbers, and the twists, if you want to call them that, are easy to guess. Indeed, even the completion is … well not unexpected by any means. However, up to that second you get sufficient bareness and savagery to keep you “engaged”. All with the understanding that this is a movie; if you compare it to the real world, you’d see nothing amusing or positive.

However, this is a movie, and it is evident that many cliches are used to entice the viewer. And afterward takes care of its business … that’s it and nothing less. Assuming you are into that sort of film you will be totally fulfilled … which can’t be said about each person in the film (sorry for that play on words)

In a post-Yangtze Film period when Singaporeans can get undeniably more vulgar substance on the Web for close to nothing, Siew Lup’s undifferentiated contributions of softcore sex and brutally secured broil meat is equivalent to requesting that moviegoers part with great cash in return for less. Nevertheless, Loh is deserving of some praise for the boldness of his vision and his conviction in challenging the boundaries of local cinema. One can only hope that the trilogy’s final macabre dish will include a larger portion of solid storytelling.
